Yonehiro Family Tree

Janice Mirikitani. Belle Anne's daughter from her first marriage was Janice Hatsuko Mirikitani (1941–2021) — half-sister to Layne Yonehiro, and Jason's aunt by half-blood. Interned as a child at Rohwer, Arkansas (a separate camp from the Yonehiros' Tule Lake), she went on to become San Francisco's second Poet Laureate, longtime co-director of GLIDE Memorial Church, and a National Japanese American Historical Society honoree. She married Rev. Cecil Williams in 1983.

Jimmy Mirikitani. Bunpei had (at least) two sons: Koichi, Ted's father, and Ichitaro, whose son Tsutomu "Jimmy" Mirikitani (1920–2012) — Ted's first cousin — became a well-known NYC street artist and the subject of the 2006 documentary The Cats of Mirikitani. Jimmy was interned at Tule Lake — the same camp as Horace, George, and Earl Yonehiro, on a completely different branch of the family.

SDA medical mission. Dr. Leslie Albert Smart II ran a medical clinic in Guam (1957–59) before founding an Adventist clinic in Hong Kong's Wan Chai district in 1960 — per his obituary, a forerunner of today's Hong Kong Adventist Hospital. He later practiced in Asheville, NC for 44 years as a member of Mt. Pisgah SDA Church. His granddaughter Carol married Layne Yonehiro — Horace and Shigemi's son, Jason's father — who trained at Loma Linda University School of Medicine, the Adventist Church's flagship medical school, echoing the Smart family's medical thread from the in-law side.

The Barron brothers. Gertrude Amelia Barron came from a large Illinois/Wisconsin family that moved west. Her father, Henry Clinton Barron Sr. (1855–1935, Heart Prairie, WI → Westmoreland, CA), and mother Minnie Josephine had six children: Gertrude Amelia, her sister Thyrza Adelaide, and four brothers — Claude Emerson, Herb DeWitt (who lived to 99), Giles VanVechten (d. Roswell, NM), and Henry Clinton Jr. Henry Sr. himself was a son of DeWitt Clinton Barron (1813–1863) and Mary Emerson — the source of the recurring "Clinton" and "Emerson" middle names down the line.

The Duncan line. Elizabeth "Bette" Rose Duncan was born April 13, 1926 in St. Helena, CA — Napa Valley, home to the St. Helena Sanitarium, a major early Adventist hospital, and a few miles from Angwin. Her parents, Ray Hamilton Duncan (1897–1989, born Illinois) and Ethel Rose Johnson (1898–1988, born San Francisco), both died in Angwin — the Adventist community built around Pacific Union College — which fits the family's account of Adventist roots on this side too, though no obituary or church record has surfaced yet to confirm what either of them did there. Ray's own parents, George(?) and Martha Belle Duncan, are recorded on Geni only with a wide estimated birth range (1832–1892) and no location — a dead end for now without better sources.
