NIL by Sport: Gymnastics, Basketball, and Football's Diverging Paths

Football generates the most NIL dollars in aggregate. But gymnastics converts social following to valuation at a rate that no other sport can match. Here's how NIL economics vary across all 10 collegiate sports in our model — and why the gaps are widening.

The Sport Multiplier

Our model uses a base institutional multiplier calibrated to 2025–26 market data. This multiplier captures the NIL premium that a sport's brand ecosystem generates — TV exposure, fan base size, sponsorship demand, and alumni network depth. A sport with a 4.5× multiplier generates 4.5× the base NIL value of a baseline sport under identical athlete conditions.

Football
4.5×
Highest absolute NIL volume. QB collective market anchored by Arch Manning ($6.8M), revenue-sharing floor benefits linemen too.
Men's Basketball
3.8×
NBA draft hype creates enormous early-career value. Blue-chip freshman PGs ($1–3M) lead this category.
Gymnastics
2.2×
Highest social-to-valuation conversion of any sport. Dunne's $9.5M demonstrates the ceiling; viral potential is unmatched outside revenue sports.
Women's Basketball
2.8×
WNBA + Title IX visibility surge. Clark-era media deals have lifted the entire sport's brand market significantly.
Volleyball
1.3×
Fastest-growing NIL sport outside revenue category. Strong social base, NCAA expansion into bigger venues driving brand interest.
Baseball / Softball
1.2× / 1.1×
Respectable base values but limited brand deal ceiling. Baseball benefits from MLB draft pathway for high performers.
Soccer (W/M)
0.8× / 0.7×
International reach doesn't translate well to US NIL market. Social is important but brand conversion is lower than gymnastics or volleyball.
Track
0.6×
Lowest institutional base. Olympic year spikes exist but are rare. Event-specific superstars (sprinters with viral moments) can punch above weight.

Why Gymnastics Punches Above Its Weight

Gymnastics has a 2.2× institutional multiplier — lower than women's basketball (2.8×) and much lower than football (4.5×). Yet at the elite social tier, gymnastics athletes out-earn almost everyone except the top quarterback and PG positions. How?

The answer is social density. Gymnastics performances are uniquely visual, shareable, and emotional. A floor routine clip at a packed arena generates 10–50× the engagement of a comparable basketball highlight for the same athlete follower count. This drives the social brand add-on — our model's additional revenue layer that activates above 500K weighted reach — to its highest level for any sport.

Dunne vs. Average SEC QB: A starting SEC QB with 150K followers might earn $500K–$1M (mostly institutional base + moderate social). Dunne at 9M IG followers earns $3.5–4.5M — almost entirely from social brand. The sport multiplier advantage for football is real but caps out when social reach is extreme.

Conference Premium by Sport

The conference multiplier interacts differently with each sport. For football, SEC and Big Ten schools aren't just better-resourced — they run the largest NIL collectives, which directly fund QB salaries in the $1–5M range. For gymnastics, the SEC's Alabama and LSU dominance means a higher brand ceiling because of historical success and media exposure.

Sport + ConferenceBase Valuation (avg starter, 100K followers)Elite Ceiling (1M+ followers)
Football QB / SEC$280K–$420K$1M–$5M+
Men's Basketball PG / Big Ten$160K–$240K$800K–$3M
Gymnastics AA / SEC$80K–$120K$500K–$4.5M
Women's Basketball PG / Big Ten$100K–$160K$400K–$2M
Volleyball OH / Big Ten$35K–$55K$150K–$600K
Baseball P / SEC$25K–$40K$80K–$250K
Track sprint / SEC$10K–$20K$40K–$120K

The Emerging Sports: Volleyball's Breakout

Volleyball is the most interesting growth story in the 2025–26 NIL market. The sport's 1.3× multiplier reflects a market that's expanding rapidly — the NCAA moved the Women's Volleyball Championship to larger arenas in 2024, and the TV deal upgrades brought significantly more brand exposure. Several volleyball athletes now command six-figure deals that would have been unthinkable three years ago.

The combination of team-sport social dynamics (teammates cross-promote, creating network effects) and a photogenic sport with strong female-athlete brand appeal positions volleyball as the next gymnastics in terms of social conversion potential.
